Blessing in Disguise

A few days ago we had the unexpected blessing a sick child.

Now I know that normally, a child having a 101.6* fever would NOT be considered a blessing. But what if that child, in the almost 3 years of being in our home had never (not even once!!) gotten sick? All the other children have gotten sick many times. Fevers, ear infections, stomach flu, colds and coughs. But not Quinn.

For whatever reason, children who struggle with bonding and attachment rarely get sick (at least those of parents I know). Could it be that they just have stellar immune systems? Possibly.
However, if you consider the extremely vulnerable position a child is put in when they're sick, it is worth considering that to a child unable to trust the safe-keeping of themselves to another individual, it would be terrifying. How a child manages to "not get sick" is beyond me. I have to wonder if their hyper-vigilance would be enough to put they're immune system into overdrive to where their body cannot even slow down enough to process sickness.  If you haven't personally seen the constant state of distress that a lack of bonding and attachment puts on a child, I imagine it would be difficult to believe what I am saying. I am no medical student, so I cannot prove my theory, but there is an alarming amount of similarities with unattached/unbonded children and sickness.

So... How does this relate to Quinn?

Well, after never having gotten even a little bit sick for the past 34 months, it feels like an immense answer to prayer that healing is taking place! For that, we willingly give all credit and glory to Jesus, the Healer of broken hearts. Not only did Quinn have fever, he allowed me to hold him for over 3 hours yesterday! He even fell asleep IN MY ARMS! Folks, this truly is amazing! I very strongly believe this is the breakthrough we have prayed for these past 34 months! This is Quinn's heart being healed! So do I think this means no more struggles? While i do think that would be fantastic, I'm not *quite* naive enough to believe that. However, I do believe the relationship between Quinn and myself has been bumped to the "next level", if you will.

Hands down, this is a wonderful way to start 2014!!

Oh, and interestingly enough, I just figured it up, and Quinn has been in our family for more than 1/2 of his life! 34 months as our FOREVER SON and 32.5 months with his life in chaos, moving around to 8 different "homes".

We are SO thankful for the privilege to call this amazing, spunky, intelligent, delightful child OUR SON!!

He has made everything beautiful in its time.

That is super interesting about the sick thing!:) I'm always amazed at the whole "mind/body connection" showing up in a million different ways. Praise God for him opening up to you! So exciting!

Thank you for writing about this. It's something new for me. I'm very happy for you that God has answered your prayers and that He's helping your son to trust you in all circumstances. Our son was also not sick, only in the first weeks he was with us. But after that he was not sick, not even once (for 10 months now). the doc says he has a strong body but can the adoption process have anything to do with it? I will definitely talk about it with my husband. Thanks for sharing a part of your life with us! Love, Annemieke

Hallelujah!! Rejoicing with you!! Totally believe there's more to it than just a good immune system. Praise the LORD that Quinn has let down his quard enough to become "weak"!! My mama heart can only imagine what your mama heart felt while holding your precious son.
