DIY Pendant Quilt Tutorial

Pendant Quilt Tutorial

Today I decided to make a quilt... for the baby.
Maybe that'll help him decide it's time to make his appearance.
I mean, 10 days late?! Sigh.

So I'd seen a picture somewhere in Internet land of an adorable pendant quilt.
But of course, I didn't know where I'd seen it so I decided I'd just make up my own.

Here's the tutorial... now, I'm NOT a perfectionist or quilter. I like to just kinda blaze my own trail in the sewing department and patterns r-e-a-l-l-y frustrate me so if I did something the "wrong" way, feel free to comment and correct! I'd love to know if there's a better (ie: quicker) way to do something!

You will need:

Front piece of fabric, I used white.
Back piece of fabric, I used a navy/white stripe
Piece of quilt batting
Fabric for binding, I used the turquoise

Cut the front (white), back (stripe) and batting the same size.
I made my quilt 30" x 40".

Using large safety pins, pin the front, batting and back fabrics together, making sure they're smooth.

For the pendant template, I cut a piece of paper into a triangle that had 1 5" side and 2 6" sides.

My quilt needed 21 triangle pendant pieces. You could do these whatever colors you want, I chose to use a random selection of fabrics that I had on hand, many of which were Luke's great-grandmother's!
**Note here, I wanted my pendants to have raw edges and unravel somewhat when washed, so if you do not want that look, each pendant will need to have all three edges "finished")

Decide how you'd like them laid out on the quilt top and using a running stitch, stitch them together, overlapping the corners about 1/4" or so. I did 3 strips, each having 7 pendants.

Lay your pendant strings on the top of the quilt and using strait pins, pin them in the top center through all three pieces of the (front/batting/back) quilt.

Working carefully so you don't make puckers in the back of the quilt, stitch the pendant strings to the quilt, sewing ONLY along the top of the pendants, the same place you sewed them together!

Once all pendant strings are on, start sewing around the 6 inch sides of the pendants. You should be able to sew the whole strand of pendants in one time.
Move on to the next one, then the last one.

Now the binding strips...
Cut your binding fabric into 3 inch wide strips. I cut 5 strips as my binding fabric was pretty narrow. If you can get enough to not have to piece your fabric, fantastic! I sure couldn't. Sew all your binding pieces together, end to end... you'll end up with a 3" wide strip of fabric that is L-O-N-G!

Iron it in half. Then iron each half in half. Then fold it all up (so no raw edges show) and iron that all down into a nice smooth l-o-n-g strip that is 3/4" wide.

Starting at one corner of the quilt, pin the binding around the edges, making sure your pins are catching both sides of the binding fabric. I like to work one side at a time so I don't have pins poking everywhere while I'm trying to sew. To do a corner, see the pictures...

I like to use a zig-zag stitch on the binding, just for fun.

Sew it on and wha-la!

You're done!!
